As a retired social studies teacher (36 years) whose assignment included Civics Education of which used the Center for Civic Education's "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" program central to my instruction and instructional materials (we participted in the hearings competitions) I found Julie Silverbrook's essay to be be profoundly important in regards to not only the concepts of civic virtue and civic engagement---which are essential virtues in sustaining and maintaining a republican government; after all a constitution cannot sustain itself being but a parchment design for a government. Absent citizen participation the design is nothing---but also a great resource for students preparing for competition, particularly Unit 6: "Unit 6: What Challenges Might Face American Constitutional Democracy in the Twenty-first century?". I am forwarding this essay to my state's We the People coordinator to share with teachers here in Wyoming as a resource in prepping their students for competition. Thank you Julie. And yes, this essay needs to be read and reflected upon by all Americans (and certainly candidates running for public office). Thank you Julie Silverbrook for this.
